Travel Insurance for Mongolia

If there is one single piece of pre-trip preparation that is genuinely non-negotiable for Mongolia travel, it is comprehensive travel insurance. Mongolia is a remote, medically under-resourced destination where even a minor incident — a broken ankle from a riding fall, a sudden appendicitis, an altitude-related illness in the Altai — can quickly become a logistical and financial emergency without the right cover.

Why Mongolia Demands Proper Insurance

Mongolia has limited medical infrastructure outside Ulaanbaatar. The capital has a handful of hospitals and clinics capable of treating serious conditions, but out in the countryside — and certainly in the remote western aimags where eagle festivals take place — medical facilities are minimal at best. For anything serious, medical evacuation to Ulaanbaatar or even to South Korea or Thailand may be required.

Medical evacuations are extraordinarily expensive. A helicopter evacuation from western Mongolia, combined with hospital treatment and a flight home, can easily exceed $50,000–$100,000 USD. Without insurance, that cost falls entirely on you.

What Coverage You Need

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. For Mongolia, ensure your policy includes:

Medical evacuation and repatriation — this is the critical one. Your policy must cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation to your home country. Look for coverage of at least $500,000 USD; $1 million is better.

Adventure activities cover — standard travel insurance often excludes activities like horse riding, trekking above certain altitudes, and off-road vehicle travel. Mongolia involves all of these. Make sure your policy explicitly covers horse riding, high-altitude trekking (the Altai peaks exceed 4,000m), and adventure activities. Motorcycle riding, if relevant, typically requires a specific add-on.

Trip cancellation and interruption — Mongolia tours often involve significant upfront deposits. If you need to cancel due to illness or a family emergency, adequate cancellation cover protects that investment.

Baggage and personal effects — camera equipment, specialist outdoor gear, and laptops all add up. Ensure cover limits are sufficient for what you’re carrying.

24-hour emergency assistance — your insurer should have a 24/7 emergency line with English-speaking staff who can coordinate evacuations and hospital admissions.

Recommended Insurance Providers

Several insurance companies have strong reputations for adventure travel cover:

World Nomads is popular with adventure travellers and explicitly covers many activities standard policies exclude. It offers solid medical and evacuation limits.

True Traveller (for UK/European travellers) and IMG Global are also well-regarded for comprehensive adventure cover.

BUPA International and other premium providers offer more extensive cover for those wanting the highest limits.

Always read the policy documents carefully. The exclusions section is as important as the coverage section.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have pre-existing medical conditions, declare them honestly when purchasing your policy. Failure to disclose can void your cover entirely at the worst possible moment. Most conditions can be covered — sometimes at additional premium — but you need to go through the proper declaration process.

When to Buy Insurance

Buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip, not the week before you fly. This ensures trip cancellation cover applies from the purchase date. If you fall ill between booking and departure, you want that cover in place.

The Bottom Line

Comprehensive travel insurance for a Mongolia trip typically costs $80–$200 for two weeks, depending on your age, coverage level, and activities. That represents extraordinary value against the potential costs it protects you from.

Mongolia is one of the world’s most extraordinary travel destinations. Don’t let a fixable risk ruin the experience. Sort your insurance before anything else.
